  • Jack Shales
    Jack Shales - Chairman

    Jack has over fifty years of experience in the management of construction companies. Before founding Seagren/Shales, Inc. (predecessor of Shales McNutt LLC) in 1983, he was with another local contractor for twenty-seven years. During his career he has advanced from laborer to office assistant, to bookkeeper, to office manager, to vice president, and then to eventual owner. He has seen and been involved with just about every situation imaginable in the construction industry, and this experience is extremely beneficial to the SMC team, and their clients. His extensive civic and charitable involvement in the Elgin area has earned him a reputation as a caring individual committed to getting whatever task he is involved with finished successfully. This is a standard he applies to his business dealings as well.

    Jack is on the board of directors for Judson University, Salvation Army, Elgin Community College Foundation, and is Chairman of the board on the Elgin Riverfront Action Committee. Jack also continues to be involved with United Way of Elgin (since 1954), Jayne Shover Easter Seal Center, YMCA of Elgin, YWCA of Elgin, Larkin Center, PADS of Elgin, and Provena St. Joseph Hospital Foundation.

    John is a registered professional engineer with a degree from The University of Wisconsin – Platteville. He has over 20 years of construction experience and has managed a wide variety of projects. His problem solving abilities, reputation for fairness, and commitment to teamwork have earned him a number of repeat projects with customers who know they have received great value for their construction dollars. He is recognized by clients for his "professional expertise," responsiveness, and dependability. In addition to being co-owner of SMC, John is a member of the Board of Directors for the Fox Valley General Contractors Association and is very active in Christ Community Church.

  • Mike Shales
    Mike Shales, C.P.A. – C.F.O.

    Mike is a Certified Public Accountant who has been involved in construction related accounting, finance and administration for 24 years. From a customer’s perspective, Mike’s extensive industry experience results in competent management of contracts, pay requests, change orders and all other job-related documents. Before joining Shales McNutt predecessor Seagren/Shales, Inc. as part owner, he was controller of a large road building and aggregate mining conglomerate. Knowing that information management is the key to running an efficient construction project with all parties working as a team, Mike is always looking for ways to employ technology to make the process smoother and more accessible. In addition to Mike’s professional duties, he is very involved in the community. He serves on the boards of United Way of Elgin, Boys and Girls Club of Elgin, Visiting Nurses Association of Fox Valley and the Fox Valley Laborers Health, Welfare and Pension Funds.

    John Shales, LEED AP – Chief Operating Officer

    John graduated with a degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has over 20 years of experience in the construction industry. Over time, John has earned a reputation with customers as a very talented Project Manager with an eye for value engineering. His common sense approach to tasks results in tight but realistic schedules. John's commitment to detail and customer satisfaction has been rewarded with many long term clients who take comfort in his capacity to lead successful construction projects. As a LEED Accredited Professional, John has a keen interest and vast knowledge in sustainable construction and design. Recently, John gained invaluable experience in LEED documentation and construction during his role as Project Executive for the Harm A. Weber Academic Center at Judson University which is seeking gold level LEED certification. His involvement with projects seeking LEED certification is ongoing and the knowledge and experience he gleans positively contributes to each project John is involved with. John is also a member of American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) and has earned a Healthcare Construction Certificate from ASHE. In addition to his professional commitments, John is an active member in his church and serves on several local charity advisory boards.

    Steve Hendrickson - Vice President

    Steve joined the Shales McNutt team in 2003 after 21 years of diverse commercial construction experience. Prior to coming onboard with Shales McNutt, Steve held Project Manager and Superintendent Positions at other large commercial contractors in the Chicago area. Highlights in Steve’s career include building a $27 million CTA station and pedestrian walkway at Midway Airport; constructing several commercial and educational projects totaling over $25 million; and his position as Project Manager for Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, IL where he was involved in over $85 million in projects. Steve’s strengths include project scheduling and estimating as well as team building for the various projects he has been associated with. One client commended Steve’s management abilities by saying, "[Steve] proved to possess the experience, technical knowledge and keen ability to coordinate all subcontractors and vendors, along with the myriads of details requiring attention..." Steve's knowledge and drive for success benefit the entire Shales McNutt team.
